Beyond Safety and Decency: Intellectual Property Considerations in Makerspaces

Presentation delivered at the True North Science Boot Camp 2019 (May 29, 2019). Session Description: Unsafe practices and dangerous or indecent objects are often the first problems that come to mind when considering what could go wrong in a makerspace. Often missing from the conversation are the risks of intellectual property violations. How can we limit those risks without hindering creativity and innovation? This session will cover the types of intellectual property present in makerspaces and provide examples of issues that can arise when using various technologies. It will also outline some legal exceptions and suggests ways to reduce the risk for your library and raise awareness among makerspace users.
