This paper assesses the empirical relevance of occupational poverty traps, by examining the theoretical predictions that access to credit increases self-employment, reduces wages and affects the poorest of the poor more. Using five randomized controlled trials of microcredit treatment, we find consistent evidence for the poorest of poor prediction, but largely inconsistent evidence for the other predictions.en
