| dc.description.abstract | In this thesis, we propose two novel congestion control mechanisms, specially designed for high-speed internetwork systems. These systems consist of a high-speed network which interconnects a few low-speed LANs. Proper coupling of subnetworks having a large difference in transmission speeds has been identified as one of the major challenges to overcome. The design of these control mechanisms is done by keeping in mind that a fair and simple control mechanism is necessary when dealing with high-speed communications systems. A performance evaluation of both mechanisms are carried out by simulation. The first mechanism is suitable for short-haul networks where information exchange can be performed quasi-instantaneously. The second mechanism is an open loop control to be used in systems where the ratio of the propagation time to the packet or cell transmission time is relatively high. | |
