The material presented in this thesis can be divided into two major topics: Controllability and observability of linear systems, where these principles are presented in terms of cyclic subspaces. This is a new approach that gives further insight in the physical aspects of controllability and observability and it is also used for the construction of controllable and observable linear sequential machines. Shift register realization of linear sequential machines, where a general realization algorithm is presented. The algorithm was implemented for parallel shift register realization.
