Abstract
The stress distribution in finite plates containing rectangular inserts and subjected to axial loads has been investigated in this thesis. For obtaining the solutions, the basic differential equations have been reduced in terms of finite difference form. The influence of modulus of elasticity, shape and orientation of insert on the stress concentration produced has also been examined here. Two-dimensional models containing inserts of rectangular shape and various orientations have been analysed further, by means of the photoelastic techniques. Experimental data have been obtained along the sections where rapid stress variations are expected. Shear difference procedure has been employed to calculate the principal stress and shear stress distributions along these sections.
