This thesis aims at highlighting a few translation processes that occur within the europhone postcolonial literature. The postcolonial writer transfers a thought that is first anchored in his/her own language and culture into the foreign coloniser's language. This form of translation does not intervene as a bridge linking two distinct pieces of text, for in this case there is no such thing as an original text in the usual sense of the word. A metatext (Tymoczko) is rather what plays that role, shaped by the colonised writer's culture depicted through the different characters of his/her fiction evolving in his/her mother tongue. This writing-as-translation process differs from writing in a second language because the postcolonial context leads the colonised writer to question the representation of him/herself and that of the Other.
