Item type: Submission , Escaping The Binaural-Dimension: A Theoretical and Methodological Approach to Discussing and Analyzing Gender and Personae In Popular Music(2022) Maisonneuve, Justin; Watson, JadaStandardized binaries can be found throughout the musicological and musical corpus, often pinning concepts between two oppositional poles: this is especially true in discussions of gender. The systems that are in place do not provide the necessary tools to discuss non-heteronormative gender identities, usually avoiding these subjects completely or enforce conventional binaries unto these queer artists. The objective of this paper is to develop a theoretical and methodological framework that will allow researchers to analyze and approach the topic of gender identity when examining popular musicians and their artistic personae. For this specific study, I will be applying these concepts unto a case study of Dorian Electra’s “My Agenda.” By doing this, I will be able to show the effectiveness of adopting a nonbinary approach when analyzing personae and their gender states. The following multimodal analysis explores the tracks musical and lyrical construction, its intertextual references, and proposes a theoretical framework which centres artists within space and time. Exploring a variety of topics including hyperpop, meme culture, Alex Jones, alt-right conspiracy theories, and gay frogs, the analysis shines light unto how contemporary popular musicians are using memes in the construction of their personae and its gender expression.Item type: Submission , Copyright and Related Rights: A Guide for Performance Librarians(2020) Geller, Chloe; Brunet, MélanieThe purpose of this handbook is to provide a condensed, central source for information on copyright and related rights specifically pertinent to the performance library and to provide some background on the regulations we are subject to in Canada. This handbook summarises major international agreements on copyright as well as the domestic law of Canada to make copyright clearer to the average librarian, musician, or administrator. Legal documents can be dense and confusing, but these summaries are intended to simplify and highlight sections and articles most relevant to the library. The differences between moral and economic rights will be outlined in relation to operations within performance organisations and how each of these rights affect the performance, broadcasting, and recording of music. Other topics, such as the term of copyright in Canada, licensing, grand rights, and considerations for touring will also be explored and related back to the library, and performance organisations in general.Item type: Submission , Anxieties Associated with Disabilities in Music Education and Performance: Recognition to Potential Solutions for Accommodation(2013-10-30) Watson, GwenResearch on disabilities and accommodations has grown significantly in recent years, in part due to the intervention of governmental agencies who have implemented new definitions and laws to protect individuals with disabilities. This research paper discusses anxieties present in three disabilities—learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, and visually impairment or blindness—by examining the effects of anxiety in performance and classroom situations. This paper is divided into five main sections. I begin by outlining some key terms used in the literature on disabilities (Section 1). Section 2 focuses on learning disabilities by examining the issues surrounding diagnosis and anxiety, while Section 3 discusses Autism Spectrum Disorder, the relationship between Asperger Syndrome and music, savant performers, anxieties, and accommodations for performers with Asperger Syndrome. Section 4 examines a physical disability, visual impairment and blindness, in relation to blind hearing, anxieties, and Braille scores. The last main section (Section 5), which focuses on technologies and music therapies, evaluates the benefits and drawbacks of technology, as well as music therapy. I conclude by reflecting on the current limitations and propose future steps needed to better address the needs of individuals with disabilities.Item type: Submission , Reinventing the Tango: A Comparative Analysis of Matos Rodríguez’s La Cumparsita and Piazzolla’s Otoño Porteño(2012-06-07) Holten-Andersen, MaximilianoThe purpose of this study is to provide a comparative analysis of La Cumparsita by Gerardo Matos Rodríguez and Otoño Porteño by Astor Piazzolla to demonstrate how the latter composer varies traditional tango rhythmic units, while including elements from jazz and Western art music in the framework of a traditional tango dance. This results in the creation of a new hybrid genre, Nuevo Tango, ultimately allowing Piazzolla to leave a personal imprint on the rich history of the tango. The comparison focuses on instrumentation, form, harmonic structures, and rhythmic structures. In order to analyse rhythmic structures, I borrow Harald Krebs’s analytical model, which outlines criteria for the interaction of metrical layers, and combine these metrical layers with rhythmic units rooted in the tango tradition.
