dc.description.abstract	In this thesis, the environmental values of Canada and Sweden as they are embodied in the forest policy of these two countries are examined within the framework of Beck's theory of the risk society to discover whether there is evidence to support Beck's theory of the evolution of industrialised countries from primary to reflexive modernisation. The historical, cultural and social-structural conditions underlying the development of Canadian and Swedish forest policy are also investigated in order to situate those policies in their historical and comparative context.
