dc.description.abstractThis thesis examines and suggests solutions to some of the technical problems and performance problems encountered when designing, modeling, and evaluating a Connection-Oriented (CO) data service in Distributed Queue Dual Bus (DQDB) Metropolitan Area Network. The CO data service primarily supports applications with high Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, such as video and audio. These applications usually are time-sensitive so that a guaranteed bandwidth and limited access delay should be warranted. The challenges in designing the CO service will involve issues such as performance, reliability, evaluating of the system, availability, etc. We present and study a CO service in the base of a former proposed theorem. Our research emphasizes on the ability of CO service to support various types of applications and source sharing among CO and other services. The proposed CO service is designed following the standard distributed queue principle of providing a moderate fairness of utilization. It provides scalability while maintaining the requirement of the two most important performance metrics: CO service throughput, and CO service response time.
