Through detailed examination of academic and policy literature, this thesis explores the types of non-state OAGs involved in urban violence – such as private security companies (PSCs), vigilantes, gangs, and organized crime groups – their characteristics and their impacts on urban environments. The category of OUV is further developed through two case studies: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Cape Town, South Africa – cities which have a proliferation of urban non-state OAGs and high levels of urban violence.enurban violencehuman securitygangsorganized armed groupsRio de JaneiroCape TownOrganized Urban Violence: An Examination of the Threat of Organized Armed Groups to Urban EnvironmentsThesis
