The design and implementation of the user interface and the Web server extension to a relational database application.
|Title:||The design and implementation of the user interface and the Web server extension to a relational database application.|
|Abstract:||The Web provides new opportunities for gathering information from multiple, distributed, heterogeneous information sources. However, this distributed environment poses difficult technical problems for the information-seeking client, including finding the information sources relevant to an interest, formulating questions in the terms that the sources understand, interpreting the retrieved information, and assembling the information retrieved from several sources into a coherent answer. We have developed a relational database application to tackle these problems. The Global University Database (GUD) project, funded by Nortel, has been developed by the GUD group at the Multimedia and Mobile Agent Research Lab (MMARL), University of Ottawa, Canada. The project was initiated around September 1997. The idea is to retrieve the University-relevant information through the Internet, and to populate a local database with the data extracted. The database may be updated to reflect the changes that could have occurred on the university Web sites from which the data have been extracted. The users will then access and query the database as a single source of information. The main contributions of this research are the design and implementation of the user interface and Web server extension of this relational database system. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)|
